Answers to Affiliate Program FAQs

General Questions

1. How much does it cost?

It’s absolutely FREE to join, and there are no ongoing fees to remain a member of our Affiliate program.

2. How much will I be paid for referrals?

Our standard rate is 10% of the value of orders placed on our web site, including GST, but excluding government fees and charges (e.g. trademark application and registration fees).

Just to give you an idea, our standardised trademark registration packages presently cost $395, $595 and $895 including GST, but excluding government fees and charges. We pay referrals of $39.50, $59.50 and $89.50 respectively for these packages.

3. Who can become an Affiliate?

You must be at least 18 years of age to become an Affiliate, and reside and operate in Australia.

It is preferable, though not essential, that you have a web site.

Our preference is for affiliates who provide services to businesses. Businesses that form a “good fit” with our own offerings often operate in the fields of marketing (especially branding), graphic/web design, and business consultants. Others include accountants, financial advisers and business coaches etc.

We review all registrations, and have the right to de-register any Affiliate that we deem not to be suitable for whatever reason.

4. What are the benefits of becoming a Magnum IP Affiliate?

Besides the opportunity to increase your revenue, we believe that referring your clients to us will ensure that they are properly protecting their valuable intellectual property. Many businesses overlook these issues until it is too late.

We’ll work with you in order to help you (through periodic newsletters etc) to identify intellectual property issues that will be relevant to you, your own clientelle and user base. This will help you to offer a holistic and valuable service to your own clients.

5. How do I start?

After you register by filling in our online registration form, log in and visit the “banners” section of our web site. Choose the banners or links that you’d like to use and upload them or send them in emails. It’s as simple as that!

Referral Tracking Questions

6. How do you know whether your customers and clients have been referred by me?

We combine two pieces of information to identify Affiliate-referred orders. First, when a user clicks on the link to our web site which is provided by you, a small, completely harmless, text file (called a “cookie”) is saved on their computer. This file includes the unique affiliate ID code, which is assigned to you upon registration in our Affiliate program.

When that user places an order on our site, our web software checks to see whether your affiliate code is stored on the customer’s computer. If it is, then you are credited with the referral.

7. How do I know whether my users are clicking through and making purchases?

All Magnum IP affiliates have username and password access to their own console which shows the number of clicks:

The console also shows the number of provisional sales:

In addition, you might like to install your own software on your own server to track the number of clicks being made from your emails or your web site. We can recommend Google Analytics, which is free to use.

For trademark referrals, you can search IP Australia’s online ATMOSS database for free (click “enter as guest”). Here you will be able to see whether particular trademarks have been applied for and whether we are nominated as the IP Lawyers.

Finally, as with most things, there is an element of trust. Our Affiliate Program would not be viable if our Affiliates did not feel comfortable with our honesty and integrity.

8. How long do your cookies last?

Our cookies automatically expire after 60 days. While it is reasonably rare, users sometimes manually deleted cookies before they expire. If they do this, the cookie will obviously have a life of less than 60 days.

9. If I refer a person who makes more than one purchase from your web site, will I be paid for multiple sales?

Cookies continue to operate after each sale, and so you can be credited for multiple sales.

10. My client/customer told me that he/she is using Magnum IP, but I haven’t been credited with a referral, why not?

There are a number of possible reasons:

  • a very small number of users have set their browsers to include a very high level of security, which includes blocking all third party cookies
  • the user’s cookie might have expired or been deleted, which means we have no way of knowing who referred that person
  • the user may not have placed an order on our web site, which means it is not credited as a referral to anyone.

Each of the above are standard features of Affiliate Programs. We promote ourselves using a number of marketing channels, and there is often no way of knowing how a particular client comes to us.

Payment-related questions

11. Is there a minimum threshold for qualifying for referral payments?

We pay our referral fees to each Affiliate who has a balance of greater than $50 on the last day of each calendar month.

Referral fees never expire, but if you never reach the $50 threshold, you won’t qualify for any payments.

12. How often do you pay referral fees to your affiliates?

We make our payments for the preceding month by the 5th business day of each calendar month.

13. How do you make your payments?

All payments are made either via Paypal or by direct debit into an Australian-based bank account.

14. Do I qualify for referral fees for my own purchases from Magnum IP?

As long as we’ve made a payment to you in any previous month, you’ll qualify for referral fees. We think of it as being a permanent Affiliate discount.

Please note, if you have not qualified for a payment previously you are not entitled to a referral fee for your own purchase. This is to prevent people from signing up as affiliates merely to obtain a discount and without any intention of becoming an affiliate partner.

15. What happens if a customer referred by me claims a refund from you?

On some of our kits, we offer a 100% money back guarantee (usually lasting for 30 or 60 days). If a customer makes a claim on this guarantee during the guarantee period, you will not be entitled to a referral fee on that sale.

16. I have not been paid a referral fee all of the sales shown in my console, why not?

The console shows provisional sales, not completed sales. Unlike our DIY Kits, when people place orders for trademark registration packages on our web site, there is no binding contract, and occasionally, we do not end up acting for them.

We cannot act for a small number of people because of potential conflicts of interests with existing clients. For example, their trademark might be similar to that of an existing client, and we might need to advise our existing client as to whether there is an infringement etc.

Further, not all of our DIY packages are suitable for everybody. We may refuse to act for a client who wants to use our basic trademark registration package where it is clear that the package is unsuitable for them.

Occasionally, people just change their minds for whatever reason and don’t proceed with a trademark registration.

In each of these circumstances, we do not pay referral fees because no work eventuated from the referral. Our aim is always to be transparent, and where a conversion doesn’t eventuate, we will usually let you know by email.

19. I’m a graphic designer, can I design and display my own ads?

If you’re going to display content on your web site, we believe it should fit with your own design styles and preferences. We’re happy to work with you in order to come up with a solution that accommodates both parties.

Please note, your ad will need to be approved by us before it’s used.

If this doesn’t appeal to you, you can always use straight HTML text links.

20. Can I show ads in emails?

Of course. You have a few options. You can use straight text links, HTML text links or banners (click here for examples).

You should be aware though, that as the banners are hosted on our server, some programs might erroneously identify your emails as being “phishing” scams.

21. Are there any restrictions on how I can advertise?

Yes. You must not do anything which would be likely to mislead or deceive your users. In this regard, you must consider the context in which you’re placing the ads.

You must not conduct any search engine, pay-per-click (PPC) or contextual advertising campaign which involves bidding on the key words which include the words “Magnum IP” or any derivation or mis-spellings of those words.

22. I can’t see any of your pure text links in my Affiliate Console; where can I find these?
